Common Causes of Pump Cavitation
Cavitation happens when available suction pressure drops below what the pump needs, vapor bubbles form, and then collapse violently inside the impeller.
Frequent causes: a clogged suction screen or strainer, a suction lift that increased, a fluid running hotter than design, an undersized suction line, or a pump running far right of its best efficiency point.
The sound is distinctive — like gravel moving through the casing. Damage shows as pitting on the impeller vanes and can progress to shaft and bearing failure if it continues.
